About
Curious. Dogged. Unafraid.
These are traits that pulled me toward a career in journalism and that help me on the job every day. I believe in our responsibility to hold the powerful accountable and to use our platforms to reveal important facts that would otherwise be hidden. But I also enjoy the journalist’s role as story-teller, and love learning about the people and places that shape California.
I am the Sacramento bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, overseeing coverage of the California Capitol, state government and state politics. I joined The Times in November 2021 and spent a year on the editorial board writing about California politics, policy and power. Before joining The Times I worked for six years with CalMatters, a nonprofit news venture focused on California. I helped launch CalMatters in 2015 with a mission to provide robust coverage of state government and politics, collaborate with news outlets across platforms and deliver high-quality journalism that serves the public interest. As one of the organization’s founding reporters, I helped CalMatters grow from a little-known startup of six people to a statewide newsroom of 50 that is a trusted brand for in-depth news in California.
In 2019, I was selected to participate in “50 Women Can Change the World in Journalism,” a program training the next generation of media leaders. In 2020, I was included on the Washington Post’s list of outstanding state politics reporters and on Capitol Weekly’s “Top 100” list of impactful people. In 2021, I was named “Journalist of the Year” by the Sacramento Press Club and won first place for online beat coverage in the National Headliner Awards.
